Delivering on the promise of system working to generate impact in population health

As we enter the second year after the official establishment of the 42 Integrated Care Boards, all ICS Chief Executives and ICB Chairs are invited to unite at the HSJ Integrated Care Summit to discuss the opportunities and challenges of integrated care for overall improved health and well-being.

The high-level summit, held in October 2024, will gather ICS leaders, senior NHS England representatives, clinical leads, social care, local authority and VCSE for a conversation on integrated care strategies and how to improve population health management and shift the dial towards preventative health and care across the country.

What is the purpose of the Integrated Care Summit?

  • Gathering ICS and ICB leaders and help them build and strengthen meaningful connections as peers
  • Sharing original ideas on how to integrate cross-sector organisations
  • Enabling open discussions between stakeholders, and help providing clarity on guidance for ICSs
  • Demonstrating the potential practical opportunities of integrated care and drive progress and innovation for better population health

What will be discussed and what has changed in the past year?

  • Firmly establishing the practical role of integrated care systems in unifying trusts and delivering better healthcare
  • An increased focus on assessing ICBs and their leadership distinct from their providers – overall system performance
  • Yearly policy updates and developments from NHS senior representatives
  • Clearly defining boundaries and responsibilities in ICSs to facilitate accountability and trust in systems
  • Exemplifying leadership and fostering collaboration between the different healthcare services and help them work together to deliver on local priorities
  • Delivering the promise of digital integration and support of population health management tools and a firm foothold on wider determinants of health, with the aim of prevention
  • A clear assessment of ICB’s performance on primary care – significant political interest
  • With an imminent election, there will be debates how we keep our population healthy, how health and care services can best meet people’s needs and how to develop a sustainable social care system will need to be addressed – NOTE: backup date TBC for shift away from elections
  • Tackling health inequalities within ICSs and the tension between Place and System
  • Holistic care and how to link physical health services with mental health and social care services
